AMMPE expresa preocupación por brecha digital y el acoso cibernético que afecta a periodistas y escritoras en todo el mundo

In Women’s Month, Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE World), welcome the United Nations’ invitation to reflect on how important it is to use technology to achieve gender equality. Precisely in this area we face two major problems: the digital divide and cyber harassment of women journalists and writers around the world. Today we see with concern that there are countries, such as Chile, where women barely represent 20% of workers in the technology industry and their participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers is only 19%. At the same time, there are increasing reports of colleagues being attacked, denigrated, shamed and intimidated through websites and social networks, which is another form of violation of our rights. AMMPE also notes with concern how sexism continues to prevail in the media, a fact that is not minor if we consider that these are a reflection of society. Therefore, we call on governments to generate policies and actions aimed at reducing the digital divide and to legislate on cyberbullying. We also ask communicators to promote women's rights and to take care of their informative and content delivery, understanding that discrimination and gender inequality also have an expression in our language.
