The Worldwide Association of Women Journalists, Writers and Communicators, Mexico Chapter, condemned the attack suffered by colleague Ciro Gómez Leyva, describing this aggression as atrocious and cowardly.
Gómez Leyva is one of Mexico's most famous journalists, with a long career in television and radio. On Thursday night he suffered an armed attack while traveling in his van in Mexico City.
The following is the public statement issued by AMMPE Mexico Chapter, on December 17th:
"Mexico has become a threat to practice journalism. To speak of a 2022 for those who practice this profession is to speak of a black year, a year of mourning where voices, letters, cameras have been extinguished by the murder of those who, in the commitment to inform, have had their lives taken away.
"The Worldwide Association of Women Journalists, Writers and Communicators (AMMPE), Mexico Chapter, condemns the attack against our colleague, Ciro Gomez Leyva, an atrocious, cowardly act and above all, one that continues to put at risk a safe country for those who practice journalism.
"Therefore, we demand that the authorities, especially those of the Federal Government, those in charge of the Mechanism for the Protection of Journalists, function as such, that the journalist be protected, that this fact be clarified and, most importantly, that this type of attacks, aggressions and actions cease to prevail against the profession.
"Freedom of expression is not silenced by these actions or any other. Freedom, democracy, information is everyone's right".
