AMMPE World repudiates attacks on the press in Colombia

The Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE World) condemns the attacks on the Colombian media this week by the Colombian government, particularly the president's remarks to SEMANA magazine and the attacks on five journalists during demonstrations on June 7. Freedom of expression and freedom of the press are essential to the health of our democracies and journalists have the right to exercise their important functions without being harassed or attacked. As AMMPE World, we repudiate what happened in Colombia, especially when the reported aggressions took place in the context of a demonstration called by the government, which is called to guarantee the freedoms and rights mentioned above. Our association, which was born precisely to defend and promote the free and safe exercise of journalism, stands in solidarity with our president in Colombia, Cristina Castro and her colleagues in the country
