Doris Nouel: “It is essential to fight for equal opportunities for women”

“It is essential to fight for equal opportunities for women in the sector, so that they can access leadership positions. Recognition of achievements motivates and commits us to move forward, encouraging teamwork and mutual support. It is important to avoid power struggles among ourselves, as they weaken us. We must focus our efforts on unification and on conquering significant spaces, especially in countries where the presence of women in the media is much more limited than in the Dominican Republic”.

This was stated by the Dominican Doris Nouel, the new president of the World Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE World), in a recent interview published in Mercado Magazine of that country. In the article, written by Karime Rivas, Doris Nouel reveals part of her thoughts on journalism, the gender perspective and the challenges faced by women journalists and writers in a complex world.

At the XXV World Congress of Women Journalists and Writers, held last September in Punta Arenas, Chile, Noeul was elected to lead AMMPE for the next two years. She pledged to form a chapter in the Dominican Republic. In this regard, she told Mercado Magazine:

“I think it will be very important to consolidate the AMMPE chapter for the journalism community in the Dominican Republic. AMMPE seeks to connect women journalists and writers in the region and the world, creating a network of support and collaboration both in the country and in the other chapters.

The promotion of gender equality in journalism and literature will strengthen women in these fields. In addition, training through workshops will help improve their skills, which will contribute to the strengthening of democracy and a more diverse and pluralistic journalism. This type of journalism can promote greater transparency and accountability to society, to which we all belong. With our good deeds through the media, we are committed to contributing to a healthier society”.
