At the World Editors Forum, held a few weeks ago in Taipei, Mexican editor Martha Ramos, President of the World Editors Forum, delivered a heartfelt speech when announce the awarding of the WAN-IFRA Golden Pen of Freedom 2023 to Iranian journalists Elahe Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi. Both women wrote stories following the arrest and death by torture of Mahsa "Jhina" Amini, 22, after she was detained on September 13, 2022, by Iran's Morality Police. The policemen, who were attempting to enforce strict hijab rules, led to Amini's imprisonment and death, which sparked a series of protests across Iran and major capitals around the world. Both journalists are currently being held in the security wing of Tehran's Evin Prison and it is not known when they will be tried. Meanwhile the revolution's secret services have taken it upon themselves to spread a long series of fake news about them on social networks. "Let us once again raise our voices as one, loud and clear, to be heard in Tehran: release Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi, and all imprisoned journalists. Let the press live free in Iran, once and for all," Martha Ramos said emphatically.
