Editorial: "Punta Arenas World Congress: searching for answers at the end... or the beginning of the world?"
As president of the Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE), unanimously elected at the last international meeting held in September last year in Rome, Italy, I am happy to report that we continue to move steadily towards our World Congress to be held in August next year in Punta Arenas, capital of the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica (Chile).
We already have the sponsorship of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and we are working with six Chilean universities on the contents of this meeting. At the same time, we are making arrangements to bring world-class speakers to Punta Arenas.
Following the principles of AMMPE, this world presidency is committed to the promotion of women's rights and the free and safe exercise of all its members.
We are in a changing world and those achievements that we believed to be definitive today appear to be fragile. We are concerned about the fragility of our democracies and the increasing attacks on freedom of expression and the practice of journalism. There are also new ethical challenges, such as the use of artificial intelligence, and new threats to women, such as cyberstalking.
All these issues will cross the Punta Arenas Congress and, from now on, I invite AMMPE members to contribute with their ideas. But, especially, I would like to make a strong appeal to the hundreds of Chilean journalists to work together for the success of this international meeting.
AMMPE is 54 years old and this will be the fourth time that its World Congress will be held in Chile. However, this international event has never been held outside the capital (Santiago) and in a place of such significance for the world, especially when we talk about climate change and the preservation of the Antarctic continent.
The geographical location of Punta Arenas offers us the opportunity to have a different perspective to face these issues. Why? Because this city is at the southern border and invites us to Antarctica, but, at the same time, because of its latitude, it is at the top of the world and this changes our paradigms.
The invitation is, then, to climb to the summit, from where we will be able to observe a different world that offers us unlimited possibilities.
