The Association of Women Journalists and Writers of Guatemala (AMPEG), carried out within its 2024 program "Travesía de pluma y pincel", the conversation: "Vida literaria de Carmen Matute", in the Salón José Cecilio del Valle del Centenario Club Guatemala, located in the Historic Center of the capital city, on Tuesday, June 18.
The event opened with a brief welcome, and then began with the words of the vice president of AMMPE and president of the chapter of Guatemala AMPEG, Dr. Ana María Sánchez-Latour de Eskenasy, who made a synthesis of the biography of our honoree expressing: "Carmen Matute is the name that remains in the hearts of lovers of literature, it has been an incomparable voice that has managed to capture the very essence of the human experience in her works...

His talent is not limited to poetry. She has also ventured with great imagination into the narrative and the story, demonstrating a versatility and a capacity for innovation that place her among the greats of the literature of America and Europe.
His stories transport us to imaginary worlds where reality merges with fantasy, and where the characters take on a life of their own, captivating our imagination and leaving an indelible mark on our memory.

She developed her professional career in the cultural section of the U.S. Embassy as a specialist in cultural affairs for 30 years, having been recognized by the Secretary of State of that nation for her 'distinct career of services'.

Throughout his life, some of the recognitions he has received are: Member of the corresponding Academy of Language of the Royal Spanish Academy, from 2000 to date; Order María Antonieta Somoza, awarded by AMPEG in 2013; National Prize for Literature Miguel Ángel Asturias 2015; received the Recognition in Arts and Letters in 2018, granted by the Embassy of Chile in Guatemala, for his contribution to the dissemination of the work of Gabriel Mistral and Pablo Neruda.
In 2020, she obtained the recognition granted by the Higher University Council, of the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, as an Illustrious Guatemalan of Literary Sciences. This title was created by the University for Carmen. In November 2023 she was appointed an honorary member of the PEN Center, Guatemala chapter and of course she has belonged to AMPEG for 38 years.

He has written 14 books, twelve of poetry and two of narrative. They have been translated into English, French, Swedish and Italian. His poetry appears in anthologies of Guatemala, Argentina, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, France, the United States, Italy, England, Sweden and Spain.
But today we are not only here to celebrate his literary achievements, but also to celebrate his humanity, his passion for letters and his commitment to beauty."
Licensee Sandra Collado, who was the moderator of the conversation dedicated to Carmen Matute, read an excerpt from the resumes of the participating academics: Dr. Gladys Tobar, who referred to poetry; Dr. Guisela López, carried out an analysis of the narrative and story, specifically mentioning the book "Muñeca Mala"; and licensee Nicté Serra spoke about prose and essay.

The tribute was filled with warmth with the heartfelt and moving words of gratitude of Carmen Matute, who in turn received from the hands of the lawyer Delia Quiñónez, National Prize for Literature and Dr. Gladys Tobar a diploma of recognition from AMPEG, and a beautiful floral arrangement.
My father, Master León Aguilera (1901-1997), said in one of his Urns of Time: "Carmen Matute is of an avant-garde of his, of an oestrus of sudden impulses held in the peghic flight. His poems, gems so to my liking, arise from a creationist or surrealist spontaneity, from a personal and social rebellion that is reflected like light."
My most sincere congratulations to Carmencita for the tribute received from AMMPE, Chapter of Guatemala, as well as to Dr. Ana María Sánchez-Latour de Eskenasy, our most perfect and faithful organizer.
