The Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers, represented by its president Elia Simeone, participated in the launching of the new AMMPE Canada chapter in Montreal on March 23.
There, Elia Simeone took the oath of office (swearing in) of the board of directors of the new Canadian chapter, which, in its initial phase, was formed by Gabriela Casas, Levy Barragan and Irene Levy.
The ceremony was attended by the Consul General of Mexico in Montreal, Alejandro Estivill, and the act of constitution was held at the cultural center of said diplomatic representation.
Recalling that AMMPE was founded in 1969, Elia Simeone pointed out that the principles and values that guided it - such as the promotion of the rights of women journalists and writers, gender equality, freedom of expression and democracy - are still in force and that, although one might think that there is not much more to do about them, the association is concerned about how fragile its achievements are.
"Just one piece of information: according to Reporters Without Borders, 57 reporters were murdered in the world last year, an alarming increase that has our continent, the Americas, accounting for almost half of these deaths. That figure rises to around 90, according to the Unesco report," observed the president of AMMPE World.
She added that gender gaps are still present and that this is also a reality when talking about new technologies. "We are the women who have the least access to them and, in addition, we are the women, journalists and writers, who are most threatened by cyberbullying. We have a lot to do!" she urged.
For this reason, she appreciated the formation of the new AMMPE Canada chapter, as it will join the association's global network that encourages women's collaborative work and the promotion of their rights.
