New Year's Message: AMMPE and the Challenges of the Communications World

The president of the World Association of Women Journalists and Writers, Elia Simeone, sent a New Year's greeting, reminding all members that this year will see the XXV AMMPE World Congress in Punta Arenas, Chile.

"We will reflect on all the issues that link us, always from an ethical perspective. But, we will have to change our paradigm, because our north will truly be in the south," she said, alluding to the motto of the aforementioned international event.

The following is Elia Simeone's message:

"The year 2023 came to an end with an important victory for the right to freedom of information in Europe, but with the bitterness of the massacre of journalists in Gaza.

“It was also a year in which the Iranian activist and journalist, Narges Mohammadi, won the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Estoy en Punta Arenas, ciudad que es la puerta de entrada a la Antártica, uno de los puntos donde más se aprecian los efectos del cambio climático, que seguirá siendo una de las principales preocupaciones mundiales durante este año.

"This is where the scientific community comes to look for answers, and this is where more than a hundred journalists and writers will meet in Punta Arenas to address the main challenges of communication in September 2024.

"Punta Arenas is on the shores of the Strait of Magellan, the sea passage where globalization truly began more than 500 years ago. It will be the waters of this strait that will inspire our reflections on Artificial Intelligence and its ethical use, on disinformation and how we can make better use of new technologies and avoid cyberbullying, among many other topics.

"The only thing that is certain is that in these discussions we will have to change our paradigms, because our north will be here in the south.

"This 2024 holds new challenges and new opportunities for us. In the meantime, on the way to our Congress in Punta Arenas, I send you a big hug. I will be waiting for you here. Happy New Year to all of you!".
