First Study of Women Journalists in Chile reveals setbacks in perceptions of gender in perceptions on gender issues

Santiago.- The First Study of Women Journalists in Chile found setbacks in the perception that these professionals have regarding the inequalities they face in the media, as well as their criticism of the biases and stereotypes that are maintained.

On a scale of 1 to 7, the journalists consulted failed with grades equal to or lower than 3 on the treatment and degree of equality they perceive in the way men and women are portrayed on television and in newspapers.

It was also observed that journalists working in the regions feel less satisfied and are more disenchanted by the progress made in these issues than their peers in Santiago.

These are only some of the conclusions drawn from this study by the National Association of Women Journalists of Chile (Anmpe) in conjunction with the Faculty of Communication of the Universidad de Los Andes.

This work was presented during the commemoration of Anmpe’s 60th anniversary in the auditorium of Televisión Nacional.

On the occasion, the president of the National Association of Women Journalists, Verónica López Helfmann, explained that the study was applied to 363 professionals, who work in different areas of communications and mass media.

The president of the Worldwide Association of Women Journalists and Writers (AMMPE), Elia Simeone, attended the launching of the study and valued this work, as it allows the gathering of statistics on the perceptions and working conditions of women professionals in the press and communications.

«This is a study that should have continuity, so that its results contribute to measure the reality faced by Chilean women journalists, in order to be able to generate public and business policies and actions aimed at narrowing gender gaps and creating better working conditions for all,» she said.
