Homage to founder ammpe Guatemala

In collaboration with the Municipality of Guatemala City, a Civic Act was held, in which a commemorative plaque was unveiled, as part of the cultural activities for the Bicentennial of the Independence of Central America.

The Association of Women Journalists and Writers of Guatemala -AMPEG- an entity affiliated to the World Association of Women Journalists and Writers -AMMPE- is proud to honor Consuelo de Sánchez-Latour (Connie), its founder and president for several years. She was International Vice-President for the Guatemalan Chapter for several decades and Public Relations Director, having attended as a delegate to various world congresses and international board meetings of the same entity.

She was a woman who excelled in various fields: culture, education, social service, and literature. In 1973 she was recognized as a National Writer.

Although her social work with the International Lions Club absorbed much of her time, Connie’s intellectual restlessness led her to learn the international language Esperanto, created during the 1870s to 1880s by the Polish physician Ludwick Zamenhof. Its lexicon has influences from the Romance and Germanic languages, and similarities with the Slavic languages. Connie began to spread Esperanto in Guatemala, becoming president of the Esperantist Association of Guatemala. Later she would be the international vice president of the Association of Esperantist Collectors and would also publish the book “Esperanto Tra la Mondo”- Esperanto throughout the world – in a bilingual edition consisting of 500 pages.

Connie was a tireless traveler, always wanting to know other countries, other cultures. Thus, she traveled with her husband Héctor Sánchez-Latour on a splendid journey around our planet, which would be the inspiration to write her book The world before my eyes. (“El mundo ante mis ojos”)

The curiosity to know, to expand her own world vision, to access other cultures, was also reflected in her book “De las letras al Coquí”, whose theme refers to her experiences on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. This work was awarded in Cannes, France.

“Impressions, attentions and memories” (“Impresiones, atenciones y recuerdos“) is another book that arises from her trip to various cities in the United States, invited by the government of that country for being a Leader and Specialist. Once again, Connie stood out for her leadership and her distinguished writing career.

The plaque that was unveiled was to celebrate the life and work of this exceptional woman. It is because of her, for having founded our AMPEG, the association that links us to women journalists and writers from all over the world; citizens of the five continents that make

up the World Association of Women Journalists and Writers, that today we continue to enrich ourselves with thought and the work of other women in the job of writing.
